"Sensation -- story integrity"
| |
It was with a great deal of disappointment that I read "Sensation" to its ending. The fact that the ending co-ops the ending of "Satisfaction" resulted in a great deal of not only disappointment with the integrity of the story (Sensation) but with the author herself. Heretofore, I have been a died-in-the-wool fan of Ms. Devine, but her disregard of her commitment to the integrity of "Satisfaction" and to her readers has caused me to question my devotion to her writing thus far. I certainly will no longer purchase the "trade paperback" version of her books but will wait for the cheaper "paperback" version. I think that authors, once they create a story, have a responsibility for staying true to that story. "Satisfaction" was not presented as part of a series and to summarily usurp the resolution of the story by using the characters in "Sensation" strikes me as a cheap, unworthy plot device that raises, for me, serious questions about Ms. Devine commitment to her responsibility as an author and of her commitment to her readers.

I was also really disapointed with the ending of Sensation. There was no closure for the characters of Lujan and Jancie. I kept waiting for more of an explanation at the end, but the reader is left hanging and not in a good way. I thought that thier story had already been resolved at the end of Satisfaction. |

Although I've already responded to another message regarding "Sensation" and my negative reation to the story itself, I have to agree that you have expressed additional negative feelings that this book has caused me to feel towards the author herself. There is definitely an integrity problem! |

I am sooo glad that someone else mentioned this. I was a devoted fan of Ms. Devine before reading Sensation, but I seriously had problems with this book. Satisfaction was my favorite book and Lujan Galliard my favorite hero and to see him become cold, heartless, and willing to kill his own family just made me sick to my stomach. I almost swore I would never read another book by Thea Devine, but I saw one of her older titles on sale at a used bookstore, so I will probably reading a this one soon. I actually wrote to the e-mail address listed in Thea's books about the many many issues and discrepancies in this book. This was a year ago and I never got a response. Not that I expected to, but I would have been pleased if I did. My advice, DO NOT go buy this book. Buy one of her other ones like Seduction, Desire Me Only, or even Satisfaction (the one that comes before this one), but skip Sensation unless we find out there is a third installment where the book is explained. Besides the Lujan Galliard problem, I also found the sex scenes not as exciting because there were several scenes of group sex which were not about attraction but about power, corruption, and abuse of women. Then, there was the issue that I didn't believe that Kyger and his mate (I think her name was Angela but I don't remember) didn't seem in love. In every other book I've read by Thea Devine, I came away with the feeling that the characters had fallen in love. In this book, Kyger and Angela were so battered and bruised that they just kind of ended up together, but I felt like they were together more because of what they'd suffered through than a real feeling of love. My sincerest wish is that some of you are right and that maybe there is a third installment coming in which Lujan was playing an undercover role. That would be one of the only things that would get me to trust new titles by this author again. |
